A Recipe from the Souper Staff Luncheon

We have had several request for the recipes for the Soups and Salads that were provided for the Souper Staff Lunch during ‘President’s Week.’ We will be featuring them monthly. My Family's Favorite Chili
Michelle Manson

Ingredients:
1 pound ground beef or turkey (7% or less fat)
1/2 chopped white onion
2 tsp.chopped garlic from a jar
1 can 28 oz. diced tomatoes, undrained
1 can 15 oz. tomato sauce
2 tbsp. chili powder (more if you like it hot!)
1.5 tsp. ground cumin
.5 tsp. salt
.5 tsp. pepper
2 cans kidney or pinto beans, rinsed and drained
Shredded cheddar and oyster crackers for toppings

In a tall pot, cook meat and onion over medium heat until browned. Drain if necessary. Mix in remaining ingredients except cheese and crackers and cook on medium-low for half an hour. If you'd like to keep it warm for a while, place in a crock pot. You can also make this ahead of time and then heat up in the crock pot on low before serving.

When serving, top with cheese and oyster crackers. We usually serve the chili with crusty French bread and green salad for an easy weeknight dinner. For extra pizzazz serve in a bread bowl. Enjoy!

HELP US SAVE THE EARTH!

Discovery is having a Recycling Drive March 26th through April 20th. The following items will be accepted: cell phones, printer cartridges, laptops, PDA’s Digital Cameras, video games and video consoles. Please bring these items marked with your child’s name and teacher and put them in the collection boxes on the stage in the MPR. For each item collected, your child’s name will be entered into a prize winning drawing. The drawing will be held during lunchtime on April 20th. Our goal is to collect 1000 items. Did you know it takes 1000 years for a cartridge to decompose?Let’s all dig in and do our part to Save the Earth! Remember, Earth Day is April 22nd.

Thanks for your help with this effort. If you have any questions, please call Becci Battaglia @ 425-358-0218

LET’S COLLECT BOX TOPS!!!

This spring help us reach a goal of collecting 3000 box tops starting on March 26th and ending on EARTH DAY April 20th.

Here is how to help us reach our goal.
On the back of the Box Tops flyer that will come home with your child is a collection sheet. Please fill out the student’s name, lunch time, and teacher’s name. Attach box tops directly to the sheet or put them in a small sandwich bag and staple the bag to the sheet. There is no set number of box tops you will need to collect, just send in what you have. There will be a large collection box on the stage in the lunch room to collect the sheets.
On May 4th during each lunch period there will be a raffle and small prizes will be rewarded. Also if we are able to reach our goal of 3000 box tops all children at Discovery will get otter pops during their afternoon recess.
For questions contact Deb Evdemon at 425-313-3027 or devdemon@rocketmail.com
